Cakes from real weddings in the late 1990s, described by the couples who cut them — tiers, flavours, frosting and flowers.
Cake #1

From the wedding of
Kelly and Jon
June 12, 1999
This cake was made by a woman who bakes wedding cakes out of her home, with the design that was inspired by a picture in the Wilton Wedding Cake book.
The frosting is a plain buttercream. The three tiers are different flavors; the bottom is white, the middle is chocolate/white marble and the top is chocolate. The two side cakes are heart-shaped; one is chocolate and one is white.
Although the cake in the Wilton Wedding Cake book used real flowers on the cake, Kelly and Jon didn’t like them. Instead, they had their baker make a ton of frosting flowers to decorate the cake with!
The cake topper is Kim Anderson’s figurines.

This beautiful cake is a 3 tiered cake; the tiers are in a 6 edge scalloped shape and separated by clear perspex columns.
All three layers were traditional fruitcake, with rolled fondant icing.
The flowers were sugared icing, with the flowers similar in style to the flowers in the bouquets. Each tier was trimmed with ribbon to match the bridesmaids dress, and “lace” icing trim.
Cake #3

From the wedding of
Moe and Miche
June 24, 1999
This home-baked cake was baked, assembled and frosted by the brides Mother-In-Law and Sister-In-Law. They also made all of the frosting flowers.
The cake was french vanilla and frosted with an old fashioned/homemade frosting that was hand-mixed the day of the wedding. Moe, the groom, decorated the cake himself.
The cake topper was a Cherished Teddies figurine entitled, “Our Cherished Day Bride & Groom”.

Vanessa and Chris

This 3-layer cake is made with buttercreme frosting. Each layer is a different flavor; the bottom was marble (chocolate and vanilla), the middle was plain vanilla, and the top layer was chocolate.
The cake is decorated with sugar bells and sugar roses.
The cake topper is a Precious Moments musicbox, with a bride and groom underneath and arch holding hands. It plays, “We’ve Only Just Begun”, by the Carpenters.
Cake #7

From the wedding of
Kelly and Virgil
March 4, 2000
The aunt of the bride made this wedding cake.
Kelly and Virgil had an ocean themed wedding and that theme was carried over onto the cake. On the top layer was blue frosting with little “waves” in it; the cake topper was a bride and groom dolphin so dolphins looked as if they were coming out of the water. The bottom layers were the sandy bottom; there was sandy colored sugar that was laying all over the place. Then there were real shells and ones made with the frosting on the sides of it.
The bottom layers were orange and vanilla with a pineapple filling between the 2 flavors, and the top layer is chocolate. The frosting is buttercream

Cake # 10

From the wedding of
Margaret & Joon
June 19, 1999
This cake was custom designed, in accordance to the bride’s specifications, by a talented baker who works out of her home. This three tiered cake was edged with large dots and had a smaller three dot pattern scattered throughout the sides of the cake. The flowers clusters as well as the cake topper were made out of sugar frosting, and consisted of a variety of daisies, roses and violets. The cake itself was a delicious italian creme cake, which included shredded coconut and ground walnuts with a creme cheese filling. The frosting was the baker’s special – boiled italian meringue buttercream recipe.
At the wedding reception, the cake was placed on a sea of white tulle with pink rose petals scattered about. In addition, cake charms for the three bridesmaids were placed by the baker in between each tier and attached with white satin ribbons, which were pulled by the bridesmaids before the bride and groom cut the cake.
