These are the passages most often read at Christian and Jewish weddings, and the ones most couples mean when they ask for “the wedding reading”: Ruth’s promise to go where Naomi goes, the Song of Songs, Paul’s hymn to love in 1 Corinthians 13, the threefold cord of Ecclesiastes. We print them in the King James Version, which is in the public domain and still the most familiar English to many guests.
Most churches have a preferred modern translation — the New Revised Standard Version, the New International Version or, for Catholic weddings, the lectionary’s New American Bible — and a Catholic wedding Mass draws its readings from an approved list. Ask your officiant before you print anything, and see the order of the ceremony for where the readings fall.
