Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge’s Wedding, 2023

Few weddings of 2023 were discussed as much. Sofia Richie’s marriage to Elliot Grainge at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc was a private weekend on the Cap d’Antibes, and yet its three Chanel looks, its pale palette and its bride’s own short videos from the dressing room were studied for months afterward. The appeal was restraint: nothing loud, everything very good.

The couple

Sofia Richie is the daughter of Lionel Richie and the sister of Nicole Richie. Elliot Grainge, the son of Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and chief executive of Universal Music Group, founded the independent record label 10K Projects. He proposed on April 20, 2022, and they married almost exactly a year later. Richie converted to Judaism before the wedding.

The ceremony

The hotel sits above the sea on the Cap d’Antibes, and the couple treated it as a house party for the weekend. The couple married beneath a chuppah, the canopy of a Jewish wedding. Lionel Richie walked his daughter down the aisle, and the singer Stephen Sanchez performed “Until I Found You” for the processional.

The dress

All three of Richie’s wedding looks were custom Chanel, designed by Virginie Viard and inspired by the Chanel archives. For the rehearsal dinner she wore a hand-beaded gown. For the ceremony she chose a lace-embroidered halter-neck dress with a high neckline, scalloped edges and white and iridescent beading, worn with a long embellished veil and a tight updo. For the after-party she changed into a recreation of a mini-dress from Chanel’s Fall 1993 collection. Of the reception look, she told Vogue: “I can dance, [and] I can move.”

The reception

Lionel Richie sang at the reception, and at the after-party Joel and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte performed “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” The evening included a fireworks display.

Why it mattered

The wedding reached far more people than its guest list because Richie documented it herself, and the effect was to make an event of real opulence feel oddly approachable. She opened a TikTok account shortly before the weekend and posted “get ready with me” videos and behind-the-scenes clips, and the weekend became a shorthand for “quiet luxury,” the idea that the most refined clothes are the least ostentatious.

The couple’s daughter, Eloise, was born in May 2024, and their son, Henry, in March 2026.

Borrow the idea

Plan a look for each part of the weekend. A rehearsal dinner dress, a ceremony gown and a short dress for dancing lets each one do a single job well. It need not be couture; a simple slip for the after-party is enough.

Choose a single palette and hold it. A weekend reads as one piece when the bride’s looks, the flowers and the table linens stay within a narrow range of whites and pale tones.

Film your own preparations, or ask a friend to. Richie’s short videos from her dressing room are now as much a part of the wedding’s record as the official photographs. Consider a buyout. The couple took over the entire hotel for the weekend. At a smaller scale, booking every room at an inn or small hotel gives you privacy, a single point of contact and a place where guests keep running into one another. Ask about minimum stays, the deposit schedule and what happens to unsold rooms.
