Wedding Favors: What Guests Keep, and Ideas from Real Couples
Most favors are left on the table. The ones that aren’t are edible, useful, or personal — plus a quarter-century of ideas sent in by Today’s Weddings readers.

Wedding favors are one of the oldest customs at a reception — sugared almonds, the traditional bonbonnière, go back centuries — and one of the most frequently wasted. Walk through any reception room after the guests have gone and you’ll find dozens of monogrammed trinkets left behind. That isn’t an argument against favors. It’s an argument for choosing ones people actually want to take home.
What guests keep
Something to eat or drink. Nearly everyone takes these, and nothing is left to gather dust. Local honey, good chocolate, cookies from a family recipe, a miniature bottle of olive oil, coffee from a local roaster, a slice of the cake in a box. A late-night snack handed out at the door as guests leave is the most appreciated favor of all.
Something useful. Seeds to plant, a candle, a small jar of the spice blend from the dinner. Things that get used rather than displayed.
Something only your wedding could give. A recipe card from a grandmother’s cookbook, a print of the invitation’s illustration, a bag of coffee from the café where you met. In Puerto Rico, the tradition is the capia — a small ribbon keepsake with the couple’s names and date, pinned on every guest; see Puerto Rican wedding traditions.
A donation. A card at each place explaining that a gift has been made to a charity in your guests’ honor is gracious, particularly if the cause means something to you.
What guests leave
Anything printed with your names and date that isn’t edible. Tiny frames. Novelty items. Anything that needs assembly. Bubbles and bells, which were enormously popular in the late 1990s, still have a place — for the send-off, handed out on the way, rather than as a keepsake.
Walk through any reception room after the guests have gone and you’ll find dozens of monogrammed trinkets left behind.
Practicalities
One per household, not per guest, is entirely correct, and halves the cost.
Budget honestly. Favors add up quickly across a hundred guests. If money is tight, this is one of the easiest lines to cut; see the wedding budget.
Place them where they’ll be taken — at each setting, or on a table by the exit with a small sign. Ask someone to gather what’s left at the end.
Make them yourself only if you truly enjoy it. The archive’s favor crafts have full instructions for projects from rice roses to lace sachets, but a hundred of anything takes longer than you think.
Ideas from real couples
What follows is a piece of Today’s Weddings history. In the site’s early years, readers sent in the favors they were planning for their own weddings, and we published them. These are their ideas, in their own words and with their names, from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Some are period pieces; many are as good now as they were then.

Candy Spoons
Submitted by: Heidi
Description: We are making our own favors. We are on a limited budget so we decided to take 2 hershey kisses and but them on a plastic spoon. Then I made little tags on the computer to attach to them and the verse reads:
” We thank you for coming with a spoonful of kisses
to bless our beginning as Mr and Mrs.
Our Names
Our Date“
We thought it was rather cute and inexpensive 🙂
Personalized Candy Bars
Submitted by: Jen
Description: We are doing candybars with personalized wrappers. I made the wrappers myself on Print Shop. His mom works at Nestles and she gets candybars for a box of 24 for $5. So over all our favors should be tasteful and usually something everyone can enjoy along with something that is very cost efficient. Overall I think the favors shouldn’t cost me over $20 for 100!
Kisses/Place Card Combo

All materials came from a craft supply store.

Jordan Almonds and Chocolates
Submitted by: Julie
Description: We didn’t want to go to a lot of expense for our favors, and wanted something that wouldn’t simply be left behind. So we make up favors with 5 Jordan almonds wrapped in tulle edged with a bluey/green ribbon (color of bridesmaids). We also made up some favors with chocolate liqueurs wrapped in the same tulle, and then alternated the two favors around the tables. They looked great – the pastel colors of the almonds, the colors of the foil were wrapped in showed through the tulle, giving some color to the table, and there were none left behind at the end of the night.

Beeswax Votives

Lot’s of Little Things
Submitted by: Jeannine Gambino
Description: I wanted to give a lot of different little things and didn’t know how to do it and keep within our budget. I liked the idea of a little box of mints with our name and date and the personalized post-it notes, and I also liked the white-chocolate dipped fortune cookies. I wasn’t sure how I was going to incorporate all these items on the table and make it look nice.
I did some research on the internet and found a perfect mess bag with ties on each end and I am adding a little peach rose (our flowers are cream and peach roses) to it. It looks really nice. For the kids attending the wedding, I am replacing the mints with the bride and groom bubblegum.
Cd’s
Submitted by: Colleen O’Connell
Description: I have just recently bought a computer and I have decided to make a CD for a favor. I have made the cover of the CD with a picture of my fiance and I. All the songs I have picked out are going to be at the wedding like our first dance, the father/daughter dance and so on. I have decided to do this because it is cheaper than candy or anything else it will only cost maybe 2 dollars a CD.
All 4 Elements
Submitted by: Jessica
Description: My fiance and I decided that our theme would be the 4 elements. We are having a very informal garden wedding in July, so our favors will represent water, fire, earth, and wind.
The water will be bubbles (.40 each)
The fire will be matchbooks and sparklers (.35 each)
The earth will be potted pansies and alyssum (1.50 each)
The wind will be homemade pinwheels (.20 each)
All of these have great options for colors to make them your own. We will wrap the sparklers with matchbooks in ribbon. Since ours is a garden party/picnic, we will put our favors in galvinized tubs ($10 each and reusable!) and use them for decoration at picnic tables with the guest book.
My only caution is to keep the sparklers away from unsupervised children or adults who cannot handle their liquor 😉

Submitted by: Anita
Description: Round, brass tipped chinese chopsticks. They will be in a red napkin folded to create a pocket, then napkin and chopsticks will be wrapped/tied with a gold thread. 2000 Champagne flute for toast
Submitted by: Rebecca Lewis
Description: My favor for my 2000 wedding is a glass champagne flute to be used during the toast. The glass’ stem is the number 2000. Not only is it useful and a memory of my wedding, it can also be a memory from this new millenium. I was not going to have favors but when I saw these glasses and they were on sale ($2.50 each for glass!), I just had to do it.
ASPCA Donation
Submitted by: Laura
Description: Recently in the town we live in, there has been a disaster with losing animals at the animal shelter. The ASPCA is attempting to correct the situation, but they need money. So, since we love animals, we will be donating money to the ASPCA in the name of the wedding guests. We will print up cards that state in lieu of favors we have donated the money. The cards will have pictures of our dogs on them.
Champagne Flutes
Submitted by: Sharon
Description: Since the caterer only provides plastic tableware (as nice as that is…lol), I wanted my guests to drink a toast out of a real glass. So, I thought I would get Champagne flutes personalized. They will be printed with our names “Sharon and Kirk” and our wedding date “May 27, 2000” and a picture of a shamrock (we are having an Irish wedding).
Charitable Donation
Submitted by: Susan McDonald
Description: We made a donation to the Mark Sandman Music Education Fund in Cambridge, MA. Mark was the lead singer of the Boston band Morphine. He died while performing in Italy last summer. Mark was a friend of my husband’s, and we thought this was a much more appropriate use of the money that would have been spent on favors that people end up throwing away anyhow.
I made small tent cards for each table describing the charity, and topped them with a burgundy ribbon. The guests all loved the idea, and we were happy to know our money went to a worthy cause.
